South Africa

One of the real jewels of the African continent, South Africa has well and truly emerged from its tumultuous past.  With a warm, vibrant and passionate society, and an immense diversity of experiences available, South Africa is a country with a great deal to offer.

  • Cape Town

Spectacularly set against the natural backdrop of Table Mountain, Cape Town is one of the great harbour cities of the world.  It offers wonderful cultural and historic sites such as Robben Island and the local townships surrounding the city, whilst Cape Point and False Bay offer excellent nature based experiences, including African penguin and great white shark viewing.

africa-south-africa-cape-townWithin close proximity lie Stellenbosch and Franschoek, which boast a pristine natural and architectural beauty, and a strong wine culture.  The beaches and cafés of suburban Cape Town will rival any waterfront scene around the world.
  • Greater Kruger National Park

The Kruger National Park is one of the great wildlife areas of Africa.  Whilst the bulk of the reserve has been made accessible to South African families travelling in 2WD vehicles, there are some wild and remote areas that offer wonderful scenery and great game viewing.

africa-south-africa-greater-kruger-national-parkThe Sabi Sands Game Reserve, which abuts the southern section of Kruger National Park, also offers excellent game viewing and is ideal for people with limited time.

  • Garden Route

The Garden Route sits between the city of Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.  It is essentially a long coastal drive through some wonderfully scenic parts of South Africa.  Hikes through ancient Yellow Wood forests, excellent viewing of southern right whales in the winter months and spectacular swimming and surfing beaches are just some of what the Garden Route has to offer.

africa-south-africa-garden-routePicturesque, fashionable and sophisticated, yet quaint and charming, the towns of the Garden Route include Mossel Bay, George, Plettenberg Bay and Knysna.  This region is ideal for those wanting to rent a car and explore under their own steam and in their own time.

  • Madikwe Game Reserve

Named after the Madikwe River, the Game Reserve is currently the fifth largest in the country, yet not widely known. The park is now 680 km² by itself, and 750 km² including the now incorporated privately owned land.  The terrain is mainly open grasslands and bushveld plains, interspersed with rocky outcrops and single mountains.  Madikwe has been regarded as one of the better conservation areas in Africa, offering all the major species, including lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, both white and black rhino along with almost all the plains antelope species.

africa-south-africa-madikwe-game-reserveA special feature of Madikwe lies in its unique location, a transition zone on the edges of the Kalahari, where a number of rare species occur naturally, and the bushveld. The climate is generally mild to hot, but winter nights can be cold. Over 350 species of birds have been recorded at Madikwe.

    Video Highlights

This footage was shot by Epic's Managing Director, Brad Horn, whilst guiding guests on safari. The footage you see was taken on activities with the guests. This therefore is something similar to what you might see should you visit South Africa.

For numerous of our clients, South Africa is a "building block" for a safari experience in Southern Africa; be it a visit to one of the big name lodges in the Sabi Sands (that abut Kruger National Park), Cape Town, the Rovos Rail or Blue Train or the Garden Route.
