  • Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park is a 1,000,000 acre park that is located in Montana just south of the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. The park was transformed by over 150 glaciers that carved its valleys and rounded its mountainsides. The current climate pattern over the last two centuries has seen the melting of these glaciers - approximately 25 still remain.

na-montana-glacier-national-parkGlacier is home to around 300 grizzly bears and provides the only area in the world where there is a thriving population that isn't threatened. Hiking in the park you'll be sure to see one of the symbols of the park, the mountain goat, as it may hike right past you on the trail. When not checking out the wildlife or hiking, enjoy a day of rafting or fly fishing on the Flathead River.
  • Going-to-the-Sun Road

The Going-to-the-Sun Road was completed in 1932 and is a spectacular 50 mile, paved two-lane highway that bisects the park east and west. It spans the width of Glacier National Park, crossing the Continental Divide at 6,646 foot high Logan Pass. It passes through almost every type of terrain in the park, from large glacial lakes and cedar forests in the lower valleys to windswept alpine tundra atop the pass. Scenic viewpoints and pullouts line the road, so motorists can stop for extended views and photo opportunities.

na-montana-going-to-the-sun-rockThe road is well worth traveling in either direction, as the view from one side of the road is much different than from the other. In 1983 Going-to-the-Sun Road was included in the National Register of Historic Places and in 1985 was made a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
  • Highline Trail

The Highline Trail is one of the premiere hiking trails in Glacier National Park. The Highline Trail begins at Logan Pass on the Going-to-the-Sun Road and then runs north a distance of about 20 miles. From there, the Highline Trail "merges" into the Waterton Valley Trail, which will take a hiker from the campground down to Waterton Lake on the Canadian border.

na-montana-high-line-trailThe Garden Wall section of the Highline Trail runs from Logan Pass to the Granite Park Chalet, a distance of 7.6 miles. The hike between Logan Pass and the Chalet is quite easy in comparison to other hiking trails in Glacier National Park - with only gradual inclines and many, many flat spots. Additionally, the views provided from the Highline Trail are outstanding, as the trail runs primarily out in the open, frequently at or just above treeline.

  • Flathead River

The Middle Fork Flathead River is one of Montana's premier whitewater and fly fishing rivers. It is also one of the wildest, beginning in the Great Bear Wilderness just south of Glacier National Park.

na-montana-flat-head-riverThe river's headwaters lie in the Bob Marshall Wilderness at the confluence of two small streams. From there it runs north, receiving many tributaries from glacial valleys to the east and west, most of them inside Glacier National Park. From West Glacier the Middle Fork offers some of the best whitewater in Montana and travellers from around the world come to fly fish in its amazing creeks and tributaries.
