Australian Outback Adventure
An Epic Experience – by Pedro O’Connor.
The recently opened Mt Mulligan Lodge has made an Australian pioneering and outback experience more accessible.
Located 3 hours west of Cairns in Far North Queensland, the journey to Mt Mulligan makes for an adventurous 4WD safari or scenic 35 minute helicopter flight. The lodge has a minimal footprint on the 28,000 hectare cattle breeding property where it straddles the weir that reflects the surrounding sandstone massif.
Sunrise views from each room highlight the towering eucalypt trees, the waterlily clad lagoon and the glowing red escarpment. Sitting on a private veranda with a cup of tea in hand, listening to the chorus of early morning birdsong is quintessentially Australian.
The Outback Pavilions have been smartly designed to ensure total privacy. Ideal for families, couples travelling together or the independent traveller. The outdoor firepit by the water’s edge is a drawcard. Guests can come together at sunset to soak in the colours and reflections of the setting sun. Meals in the main lodge room showcase the quality and abundance of local produce from the nearby Atherton Tablelands.
Retreating outdoors after dinner to observe the vast unpolluted nights sky is a visual treat many city dwellers will revel in. A chance to unplug and wonder at the vastness of the Southern Hemisphere.
By day the action is full throttle in the ATVs that guests can drive to remote parts of the property – and gain a sense of its size. Be prepared to get dusty and have fun! The nearby Mt Mulligan and Tyrconnell mines and townships are reminders of a bygone era when times were tougher.
Thankfully as a guest of 5 star Mt Mulligan Lodge you will not wish for anything.
A great opportunity to experience the epic Australian Outback with the comforts of the city.
