Climbing Kala Patthar and Everest Base Camp arrival

Today was an awesome day. We have arrived at Everest Base Camp (5335 m)

trekking Kala Patthar - sunrise over Everest

Kala Patthar & Everest Base Camp arrival

We started the day at 4.00 am and trekked a peak out of Gorak Shep called Kala Patthar (5,545m).

Kala Patthar affords stunning views of the sunrise over Everest. The weather was perfect – clear blue skies and still.  There was a light powdering of snow overnight which made for a very picturesque landscape.  And it was chilly as you would expect in this part of the world.

After Kala Patthar, we returned to Gorak Shep for breakfast around 7.00 am and then we struck out for Everest Base Camp. This took us a little over an hour and a half.

Everest Base Camp is a hive of activity with the Everest climbing season kicking into top gear.  It is a wonderful time to be here.

We are now ensconced in our own private camp at Base Camp for an overnight stay.  This is a differentiator to the ordinary Base Camp trip.  Trekkers ordinarily walk in and out again on the same day.

Tomorrow Paul and Steve helicopter back to Kathmandu while Sean, Guy and I head back down the valley to climb Lobuche (6,119m).

More then.
