Birthplace of the modern day safari

Kenya pioneered the modern day safari.  In fact it’s where the term safari was born (from the Swahili word meaning “journey”). For many people outside Africa, Kenya is synonomous with memorable Hollywood films, such as Out of Africa and Born Free. Kenya is a whole lot more than that.

The Masai Mara remains one of Africa’s most productive and iconic game parks and offers a total game experience.  In recent times there’s been a move towards private safari concessions on the northern side of the reserve offering a relatively exclusive safari experience.

With the Great Rift Valley running north-south, Kenya is home to a large diversity of landscapes, from semi-arid areas in the north, to the fertile plains on the footsteps of Mt Kenya, the wide open savanna of Amboseli and its environs and the rolling grassland of the Masai Mara, the classic “Out of Africa” landscape.

Most safaris to Kenya are crafted around a stay in the Masai Mara. From the Mara, there’s a myriad of options, be they in country or to neighbouring countries.  Kenya combines very well with Tanzania and/or Rwanda and Uganda.  It all depends upon your expectations and wishes.  As a general rule most clients like to combine between 3 and 4 different locations and experiences into an itinerary with a duration ranging from 9-14 days.  Kenya walking safaris offer a unique wildlife and wilderness experience for active families and small groups.

Kenya offers a sheer abundance of wildlife in the Mara, game-filled plains with Mount Kilimanjaro as your backdrop in Amboseli, and the harsh, dry but achingly beautiful landscapes of the northern regions.

Each year the Mara plays host to the world’s greatest natural spectacle, the wildebeest migration from the Serengeti. From August to October, the promise of rain and fresh life-giving grass in the north brings large herds of wildebeest and zebra together. At the Mara River they mass on the banks before finally plunging forward through the raging waters, creating a frenzy as they fight against swift currents and waiting crocodiles.

Steeped in history with a rich, divergent culture and wildlife reputation, a Kenyan safari experience is an authentic journey into the heart of the African continent and its people.
