EPIC SAFARIS

The Okavango was World Heritage listed in 2014

Botswana is still a place old time safari goers speak about with reverence. Big sky country, where nature conspires to turn our thinking about deserts, completely on its head.

From very modest safari/adventurer beginnings in the 1970’s and 80’s, Botswana has grown to become one of Africa’s prime safari destinations in the last decade or so.

The jewel at the heart of the experience is the Okavango delta. Fanning out over some 15,000 square km into the sands of the Kalahari Desert, it’s a serene sanctuary of crystal clear waterways and lagoons and home to huge wildlife numbers including Africa’s largest elephant population.

Traditionally the best months to travel are during the dry season, June through November. But the shoulder months or green season from December to May still provide wonderful, if different game viewing opportunities. Botswana gets most of its annual rainfall from late December through to mid March, when many antelope and zebra give birth to their young.

Historically most tailored safaris in Botswana range between 10 – 12 nights incorporating a range of habitats. The Makgadikgadi pans especially offer an extraordinary diversity in landscapes and wildlife, also home to a significant migration of zebra through the green season.

Botswana has other permanent and also seasonal water camps in places like the Linyanti Delta and Selinda Reserve in the north. Depending on the season, water activities in the Okavango can include boating through the channels and mokoro trips (dugout canoes) in the shallow flood zones and lagoons.

Botswana is a land locked country with a small population and a huge percentage of land devoted to national parks, wildlife management and community/wildlife conservation.

It’s close to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe and Zambia, luxury lodges in South Africa and these days there are daily return flights to Johannesburg and often direct flights in the dry season from and to Cape Town.
The wonderful frontier town of Maun, not so long ago a sleepy village, is the step off point for the Okavango Delta. With some great accommodation options now and boutique businesses opening up, many clients are staying a night ahead of their safari after their long flights from home. You must ask for an excellent locally produced Okavango gin and tonic on your safari.

Why choose us The Epic Difference
Why Choose BOTSWANA
1
Okavango Delta

What can we say about the Okavango that hasn't been said already. UNESCO world heritage listed in 2014 for its unique character, you do have to see it to feel how extraordinary this land and waterscape is, flowing as it does across one of the world's great deserts. Mokoros, water camps, open grasslands, huge elephant herds and excellent predator numbers. It's all here waiting for you.

2
Makgadikgadi Pans

The big sky and the endless horizons of the salt pans we think are a must to include in any Botswana safari. The silence, the space, the sunsets and storms in the green season. Not to mention meerkats along with some big cats. A unique and very special environment.

3
A remarkable transformation

From one of the poorest countries in Africa, Botswana was transformed into an economic and democratic success story, thanks partly to the discovery of diamonds in 1967, a year after independence. The steady leadership of first President Sir Seretse Khama, steered the small country to stability and growth. Safari tourism followed through the 1980's as visitors discovered the gems that lay in the Okavango and beyond.
