The Epic Experience

East Africa

Africa is broken into two distinct safari regions of East Africa and Southern Africa.

East Africa includes the countries of Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Ethiopia.

For the ultimate safari and to experience the full diversity of Africa, it makes good sense to combine two or more countries into the one journey.

For those needing some beach or relaxation time, the island of Zanzibar in the spectacular Indian Ocean is a fantastic add on to a safari, for the complete East Africa experience.

Kenya and Tanzania are famous as big game destinations and game-viewing here is geared around the annual migration of wildebeest and zebra through the greater Serengeti/Mara eco-system. A common misconception is that there is a distinct migration season. The migration is actually an all year round event with upward of 1.3 million wildebeest and a few hundred thousand zebra moving in a clock-wise direction around the Serengeti (Tanzania) and Maasai Mara (Kenya), following the rains in search of good grazing.

Don’t miss majestic Mount Kilimanjaro in Northern Tanzania. To summit the world’s tallest free-standing mountain at just under 6,000 metres (20,000 foot) on a big, blue sky dawn, surely rates as one of life’s great experiences.

Venture to the lesser known countries of Uganda and Rwanda, noted for their primates, particularly mountain gorillas and chimpanzees. These up close wildlife encounters are life changing.

Some East Africa safari journeys to put on the list.

  • The Great Migration through the Serengeti National Park in Northern Tanzania and the Masai Mara National Reserve of Kenya
  • Climb Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania
  • Spend a magical hour with the endangered mountain gorillas of Rwanda or Uganda
  • Western Tanzania and the Mahale Mountains National Park with its wild chimpanzees
  • Enjoy the vast open grasslands and the wealth of game on show. There are many other places to consider. Samburu, Amboseli, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Victoria and Olduvai Gorge.

Of course, anything is possible with Epic, given available time and budget.  Experience the remote natural wilderness, the myriad tribes and unique wildlife of East Africa and create memories to last a lifetime.

Most travellers who enjoy wildlife want to see a mountain gorilla at some stage. This safari allows them to do that in a cost effective way. Epic uses the socially and environmentally responsible lodges operated by companies with the best reputations in safari lodge management and conservation. Arriving into the capital, Kigali. Many people choose to visit the Genocide memorial and local markets as an introduction to the recent history and remarkable resurrection of Rwanda. This itinerary is 4 nights and can bundle very nicely with further exploration in Rwanda to Akagera National Park and potentially for chimpanzee trekking.
