One of the glorious jewels of Africa

South Africa offers a great diversity of landscapes, experiences and history. It has an exceptionally well developed tourism infrastructure with the finest lodges and hotels, to the highest qualified safari guides and camp staff.

Offering fantastic coastal scenery, especially in the Western Cape, a vibrant cosmopolitan vibe in its cities, a complex and fascinating history, topped off with world-class wineries, South Africa caters to everyone from couples, friends and families alike.

Safaris are obviously front and centre with the Big Five being a major draw-card. There are a number of prime safari spots to choose from, with Kruger Park, Sabi Sands, Timbavati and Kwa-Zulu Natal, being the most sought after. The level of service in some of the iconic camps is superb.

Of course the famous Garden Route and Cape Town are extremely popular destinations, showcasing South Africa’s diverse vegetation, stunning coastal vistas and renowned beaches.

Safaris to South Africa are sometimes undertaken as part of a broader safari holiday throughout Southern Africa, for example to include neighbouring Botswana. Victoria Falls is also within easy reach and there are some new airlines catering very nicely to destinations like Vic Falls, Maun and Lusaka, from, Cape Town and Johannesburg in particular. On other occasions we’ve designed multi-destination safaris within South Africa’s parks itself.  It all depends upon the time of year, your expectations and possibly previous experiences.

 

The inclusion of Cape Town , set against the backdrop of Table Mountain, is a must for any visit to South Africa.  In our experience, a minimum of 3 nights is needed.

Ideally you should allow 5 nights and divide your stay between Cape Town and the Winelands, with its rolling vineyards and picturesque mountains.  The distinctive Cape Dutch architecture, oak-shaded streets lined with cafes, boutiques and art galleries, make them a popular destination with locals and tourists alike. The colours of Bo Kaap have to be seen to be believed.

There is also an awesome walk over several days that begins a couple of hours south of Durban. Brad and Annie recently did it with a group of friends, much of it taking in the most stunning coastline and ocean views. It’s called the Pondo trail (below).
