The Pearl of the Indian Ocean

The ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, Mozambique is a south-eastern African nation that boasts 2 500 km (1 550 miles) of pristine coastline and beachfront on the mainland, with a string of beautiful and idyllic tropical islands, glittering like jewels in the warm, azure waters of the Indian Ocean.

Mozambique is a fantastic add on to a safari in Southern Africa. Soft, white sand beaches lined with coconut palms and turquoise waters stretch as far as the eye can see. Traditionally a seafaring nation, Mozambique has remained an exclusive destination as many of its islands and mainland beaches are isolated and secluded, offering travellers the ultimate escape.

There are no golf courses or shopping malls here, but the unspoiled natural beauty and rich marine life has pushed the country to the top of the list for honeymooners, scuba divers, water sport fanatics and anyone seeking a luxury African beach retreat. Make sure you think about it for including in your travel plans.

In the Quirimbas Archipelago, a 250km stretch of coral islands, mangrove-covered Ibo Island has colonial-era ruins. A diving and snorkelling destination, as is Bazaruto Archipelago farther south, with reefs protecting rare marine life including dugongs.

Mozambiques’ rich traditions, cultural mix and vibe and – most of all – its opportunities for adventure put this enigmatic African country well off most travellers’ maps. But it has much to offer those who venture here. The warm turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean abound with shoals of colourful fish, well-preserved corals, remote archipelagos in the north, pounding surf in the south and graceful dhows with billowing sails. The capital Maputo offers colonial-style architecture while the surrounding land has vast tracks of bush populated with elephants, lions and birds galore.

Relax in a beachside luxury retreat and take in another Epic Southern African journey.
