The guide to guiding

They are the storyteller. The naturalist. The host. The problem solver. The entertainer. The protector. The calm presence when plans change. They are the guides.

Not all guides are created equal – a handful of great guides stand out from a big pool of good guides. A great guide is the key turning good safaris, into great safaris. Good guides will make sure you see Africa, great guides make you truly experience it. They are the reason a holiday becomes the story that is retold for years afterwards.

There is a moment on almost every safari when everything changes. It may be just before sunrise, as the first light filters through a grove of ancient trees. It may be the distant alarm call of an impala. Or maybe it’s simply the quiet confidence of your guide saying, “Let’s wait here for a moment.” Then a male lion appears, emerging confidently out from the thickets. It feels like luck? But those who have travelled Africa long enough know that moments like these are rarely accidental. They are often the result of something far more valuable: a truly exceptional guide.

At first glance, guiding may seem straightforward. Spot the animals. Drive the vehicle. Explain what you’re seeing. A good guide can certainly do all of that. A great guide does something entirely different.
The finest guides possess an extraordinary depth of knowledge, but what makes them exceptional is knowing when to share it. They read the landscape, almost instinctively. A fresh track crossing the road. The subtle behaviour of a flock of birds. The direction of the wind. The uneasy silence that suggests a predator is nearby. Long before guests notice anything has changed, a great guide has already begun piecing together a story unfolding around them.

The very best guides are also exceptional hosts. They quickly understand the rhythm of their guests. They know who enjoys long conversations and who prefers silence. They recognise the amateur photographer searching for perfect light, the passionate birder listening for distant calls, the family experiencing Africa for the very first time, and the seasoned traveller who has visited the continent many times before. No two safaris should ever feel the same because no two guests are the same. Great guides recognise these nuances instinctively. They shape each day around the people sitting beside them, creating an experience that feels deeply personal, rather than rehearsed.

Often, it is the smallest moments that remain with you longest. Stopping the vehicle simply to listen to the deafening silence, muffled by the gentle breeze. Sharing coffee beneath a centuries-old tree with a view stretching for miles and miles. Gazing across a river, watching elephants slowly wade through. Lying on your back looking up with wonder at the infinite milky way galaxy. Sipping an icy gin-and-tonic, toasting another beautiful sunset. These moments cannot be manufactured.

Guests remember the animals they saw, but they will never forget how the safari made them feel. They’ll never forget the guide who helped them slow down. The guide who noticed details they would never have been seen. The guide who made them laugh around the campfire. The guide who quietly transformed a holiday into something deeply memorable.

I will never forget the patience and foresight of our guide in Botswana a few years ago. The morning game drive was nearing its end. The sun was started to bake us, as it climbed higher into the blue. Our tummies started to rumble, thinking of a scrumptious breakfast back in camp. But our guide suggested we stay out a longer. “Let’s follow this leopard for a little while longer. She is hungry this morning.”

All the other vehicles were back at camp whilst we continued to trail behind her. It was just us and thousands of acres of wilderness, and a hungry female leopard. She walked. She stopped. She listened. She walked again, repeating the slow ritual of exploring her territory, looking for a meal. Suddenly she stopped dead still, craning her neck to see into the thickets. Then her eyes focused on something in the undergrowth. Her body froze into a statue, not a muscle moved. Quietly, she began to move again, in the opposite direction, backtracking her steps. This time she moved very slowly, each paw painstakingly placed on the ground, stealthily and silently she slunk towards a big tree. Then she leaped upwards into the tree, and with two more bounds was 15 feet off the ground. Two fully grown impala rams where heading in her direction, moving slowly, feeding as they went. They walked into our view, and it took ages for them to cover the short distance to the tree. Oblivious to the threat lurking above them, they paused in the shade. For what seemed like eternity (in reality it was about half an hour) we watched, and waited, and watched, and waited. The leopard was waiting too. The impala stood in the deep shade, and then, the leap. I’ll never forget that lithe and powerful body, falling straight onto the back of the impala ram. The desperate panic to try and shake the leaped off was to no avail. The cunning hunter had already latched on, and she wasn’t letting go. Minutes ticked by as the impala weakened, and eventually gasped its last breath. Our hearts were still racing when we eventually rolled back into camp. Lunch was being served, and the deck was full of guests, chatting over their meals, unaware of the drama that we had just witnessed. We felt so fulfilled, lucky, and proud. I will never forget that morning, for as long as I live.

Luxury on safari is often measured in the size of the tent, the taste of the food, or warmth and texture of your comforter at night. These things certainly matter. But the greatest luxury of all is spending time with someone whose passion, knowledge and intuition reveal a side of Africa that few people ever truly experience.

The guide becomes the thread that connects every detail. It’s the difference between seeing Africa…and truly experiencing it.
